YOUR PRIVACY
Learning with care.
Effective September 24, 2026. Flashling is operated by Eric Lindstrom. This policy describes the Flashling app and this support website.
What the app stores
Flashling stores learning progress on your device: cards attempted, correct answers, spelling-slip counts, practice dates, review timing, XP, and streaks. Badges and weakness reports are calculated from this progress. Raw typed answers are not included in the saved progress.
Private cloud backup
In builds with cloud backup enabled, the app sends this progress over HTTPS to our Vercel-hosted API and stores it in a dedicated Flashling MongoDB database. A random device credential identifies the installation; its hash identifies the backup on our server. An optional first-use nickname personalizes the greeting. It is stored only on your device and is never sent to our server. You can change or remove it in Settings → Change my nickname (choose Skip for now to remove it). We do not request an email address, date of birth, or location.
The device credential is stored in the iOS Keychain. A browser preview stores its credential in browser storage. Backups belong to that installation; this version does not provide cross-device accounts or a recovery service.
Service providers and technical information
Vercel hosts the API, MongoDB hosts the database, and GitHub Pages hosts this website. These providers may process connection information such as IP addresses and technical logs to deliver and secure their services. Flashling's API uses short-lived hashed IP-and-time buckets for abuse prevention; these expire after about two minutes (database cleanup may take longer). We do not sell personal information, run behavioral analytics, show advertisements, or track users across apps or websites.
Children and families
Flashling is designed for learning, including use by children with a parent or guardian. It has no social features, messaging, purchases, or third-party advertising. A parent or guardian can reset the app's progress or contact us with a privacy question. Please do not email a child's sensitive information.
Retention and deletion
Learning progress remains until it is reset. Reset progress preserves your nickname; remove it separately with Change my nickname → Skip for now. In the app, open Settings → Reset progress and confirm. When backup is enabled, this deletes the cloud progress before clearing the local copy, and requires an internet connection. Uninstalling the app alone does not necessarily delete the cloud backup or Keychain credential. Reset before uninstalling to remove the learning record. Infrastructure logs or provider backups may be retained according to provider policies.
TestFlight beta testing
If you join a TestFlight beta, Apple processes your tester email address, device and app information, crash reports, and any feedback you submit under its TestFlight privacy terms. We use the tester contact details to manage invitations and use beta feedback to fix problems. This is separate from the app’s anonymous learning-progress backup. You can stop testing in TestFlight or contact us to remove your tester invitation.
This website
This site has no analytics, advertising, cookies set by Flashling, or contact forms. GitHub may process standard hosting access logs. External links and email use the service you choose.
Contact and changes
For privacy requests, contact elindstr@gmail.com. Because we do not collect an email for app profiles, we cannot identify a particular backup from an email address alone. In-app reset is the direct deletion method. We will update this page and effective date when this policy changes.
